Back in 2014 I was running Marketing Doctor with offices and staff and everything else that goes with running a busy company. I was single too, so I didn’t even have anyone to talk my challenges through at home with.
The stress of running a business felt like it was killing me, and sometimes just talking it through out loud helps, doesn’t it? Friends and family mean well, but they can’t give you the solution to the problems that you have because they have your best interests at heart, not what’s best for the business.
I’ve always known that being asked the right question at the right time by the right person would give me the answer that I needed.
You know that feeling – you get so bogged down with running the business on a day-to-day basis that you can’t see the wood for the trees and the enormity of that can feel overwhelming some days.
So I looked for women business owners that I respected, and asked them to meet up in an informal way on a Friday afternoon. During that first 12 months or so we tried lots of different ideas to make the most of the meetings and we finally got to a formula that really worked well. What I realise now is that this was the pilot group.
We tried and tested lots of different ideas until we got something that really worked for all of us. We ran this Board for 18 months until we got to Christmas 2015 and one of the members said, “ Frances this is really good, have you thought about making it bigger?”
And the rest, as they say, is history. I decided to run Marketing Doctor and Bird Board alongside one another early last year and then make an informed decision about where my future lie, and by June last year I knew that I wanted to focus all my energy on Bird Board.
The website went live in the Spring 2016 and we have gradually been launching Boards throughout the region ever since.
I feel like I’ve finally found my purpose in life. Like I have been put on this earth to do this thing.
The reason that I love it so much is seeing women walk through the door with the weight of the world on their shoulders and watching them walk back out, knowing that they have the answer to that thing that is keeping them awake at night.
It’s so empowering for all the women who are part of it. The connections, support, warmth and knowledge. Who wouldn’t want to be part of something that makes women in business feel so amazing?
I almost feel like Bird Board has chosen me.
